Dungarvan
A Harbour Town with Heart
Dungarvan is one of the most attractive towns on Ireland’s south coast, set around a sheltered harbour where the River Colligan meets the sea. The town centre has a lively square, independent shops, cafés and pubs, and the 12th-century Dungarvan Castle overlooking the quay. Abbeyside sits across the water, with its own village feel, the ruins of a medieval Augustinian friary and views back over the harbour to the town. It’s a place where you can walk to almost everything and still feel close to the sea.
The Waterford Greenway on Your Doorstep
The Waterford Greenway starts here. It’s 46 km of traffic-free walking and cycling along the old railway line from Dungarvan to Waterford City, passing over viaducts, through the Ballyvoyle Tunnel and along the coast. White Haven is a short walk from the route, so a family cycle, a morning run or an evening stroll can start from your front door. Bike hire is easy to find in town, and there are plenty of places to stop for coffee along the way.
Beaches and the Coast
Life in Abbeyside is shaped by the sea. Clonea Strand, one of the most popular family beaches in Waterford, is minutes from the house. Abbeyside Cove and the coastal walk along the bay are right on your doorstep. Further along you’ll find Helvick Head, with sweeping views back to Dungarvan Bay, and the Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark, with dramatic cliffs and hidden coves to explore.
Mountains, Golf and the Great Outdoors
Just inland, the Comeragh Mountains offer some of the best hill walking in Ireland, including the famous horseshoe walk around Coumshingaun Lough. Golfers are spoiled for choice, with several well-regarded courses in and around Dungarvan, some with views over the bay. Whether it’s hiking, sailing, kayaking or a round of golf, there’s always something to do at the weekend.
Food, Festivals and Community
Dungarvan has a reputation as one of Ireland’s food towns, with excellent restaurants, a weekly farmers’ market and the annual West Waterford Festival of Food. The community is just as strong: schools, sports clubs and local services are close by, and Waterford GAA plays at Fraher Field in the heart of town. With the Ring Gaeltacht nearby and easy N25 access to Waterford City and Cork, it’s a town that has everything for family life.
